CHRIS TRAN AND PATRICK YEE GO THE DISTANCE AT MAYHEM XIII
October 2 - New York - Weapons 9 instructor Chris Tran fought a tactical 5-round battle against a game Patrick Yee of Sitan Gym of New York. In front of a packed house and under the bright lights of the Roseland Ballroom, Tran opened the card and set the tone for the rest of the evening’s fights. The veteran fighter looked as crisp as ever, landing his hallmark right cross seemingly at will. Yee, however, proved to be a formidable opponent and scored quality strikes of his own, though none appeared to rattle Chris. To both fighter’s credit, this was a match that showcased refined Muay Thai skills. We saw effective use of the clinch and right round kicks, the prominent weapons of Thaiboxing. In the third round, Chris connected with a left hook off the clinch that had Yee wobbling at the knees. Yet, in the end, Yee captured victory on the scorecards. Still, there was no “loser” in this match. It went the distance, and both Yee and Tran earned the respect of the other, as well as the esteem of the hundreds in attendance.
Competitive fighting is no easy task. Countless hours of training are brought to bear in five “brief” 2-3 minute rounds. You need both confidence and conditioning for success. Win, lose or draw, there is a great sense of personal accomplishment knowing that you prepared as best you could, and gave your very best effort at the battle. Taken in that context, the score on the judges’ cards matters very little. Congrats to Chris Tran for getting in there last Thursday night and giving his all, not just for Weapons 9, but also for himself.

GIVES VALIANT EFFORT AT
COMBAT AT THE CAPITALE
1/25/08 - New York City - Known for its beautiful atmosphere, New York's Capitale was center stage for yet another night of exciting kickboxing action. In 2008's first Combat at the Capitale, our own Nick Harrison went toe-to-toe with TSK's Jimmy Rivera. Typical of TSK fighters, Rivera was aggressive from start to finish. And though Harrison arguably displayed the finer Muay Thai skills in all three rounds, the judges placed greater value on Rivera's higher productivity and awarded Rivera the unanimous decision. Both fighters fought with much spirit and determination and deserve congratulations for their effort.
