We started WEAPONS 9 MUAY THAI with the goal of teaching authentic Muay Thai kickboxing in the New Jersey region. We have assembled a team of experienced and dedicated trainers to assist you in reaching your goals. Our staff of courteous, experienced fighters is eager to relay their knowledge of ring fighting and self-defense (as effective Muay Thai is as a combative ring sport, it is as valuable as a street self-defense).
Brief History:
The development of Muay Thai saw the transformation of the human body into a multifaceted weapon inspired by the weapons common to the time. (1) The shins became the staffs of the pike, used to block and strike. (2) The arms became the raised twin swords of defense, the fists functioned as the jabbing tip of the spear. (3) The elbows developed into the battle axe, used to smash and crush. (4) The knees, too, axed their way through an enemy's defenses.
As each part of the body was a weapon unto itself, Muay Thai has often been described as the art or science of "8 limbs" or "8 weapons." Going further, however, Muay Thai can also be viewed as having a 9th weapon -- the mental aspect. We believe this is integral to the art and carries with it the old traditions of the ancient "fighting spirit." While taken literally, "using one's head" can indeed be considered a weapon (i.e., head-butting or using the head to gain leverage in the clinch), we consider the will to succeed or overcome equally as important as the skill. Thus, the use of "wit" and strategy to outsmart one's opponent is a weapon itself. Our classroom drills will therefore always test your mind and "spirit" in an attempt to build not only mental toughness but also strategy. We believe it is essential to employ all 9 weapons in the study of Muay Thai.
